Relationships are primary. The quality of student learning and the quality of education (process of educing) flow from the quality of relationships. A compulsive concern with the characteristics of the participants can cloud the importance of the quality of the relationships. Beware the college which is compulsively concerned with admitting only the "best" students, and hiring professors trained in the "best" graduate schools---while taking no practical steps to facilitate quality personal relationships within the college. Real personal relationships change the participants in reciprocal ways. Professors who are not changed by entering into relationships with students---are cheating themselves and their students. Real educators are not eternal agents who transform immature children into mature adults. Real educators are mortal creatures who share their lives as students with other students. If participants regard their relationships as ones of dominance and submission---there is little education and much game playing. Real differences in levels of intellectual, emotional, and spiritual maturity should be honestly accepted and each contribute as she or he is able to the further growth of other, whether professor or student. Relationships crate and depend upon self-images. New relationships can create new self images. New self images can create new relationships. The preservation of traditional relationships and self images creates a false security which involves estrangement, alienation, sin; and so ultimate insecurity without hope or meaning. Maintaining full control over relationships destroys authentic relationships and blocks the open communications which are the essence of authentic real authentic personsassociate The essence of education is a dialogue of ideas, visions, fantasies, emotions, hopes, aspirations, criticisms, analyses, syntheses---with love in an emotionally fail-safe community in which channels of communication are kept open. The flow of technical knowledge and information from teacher to student is not education. The quality of a college education depends primarily upon the quality of the professor-student relationships, and so upon the extent to which all channels of communication are open.
