They are as corks on a stormy sea, the victims of cause and effect according to their heredity and environment. The fact that they may be the victims of the blows inflicted by others in an identical situation does not alter the essential nature of their common situation. Such individuals have no will. They do not decide. They do not intend. They do not act. They merely react to causes as effects in a cause and effect chain which links all together in a common prison. The prisoners are contained by the self-images of self and others which define the nature of reality, and what it is to exist. In the realm of scientific analysis the concept of "will" has played no important role. As the power of scientific analysis has become respected more and more, the models which engender that power have become the dominant focus of many persons' attention---to the exclusion of models which are not congruent with the scientific models. As a result both scientists and non- scientists have appropriated many of the models, images, unexamined assumptions, and ways of feeling which characterized scientific analysis --- and tried to live lives in terms of such appropriated exports from scientific laboratories. Even those who are very critical of science and scientists have been participants in the process of appropriation and use of scientific models, assumptions, images, and feelings. If a model is sufficiently like that which it is not, the model may be helpful in facilitating a mutual understanding of that which it represents. Where in science is one to go to find a model sufficiently like human will? I would seem that some have become the victims of thinking that human will does not exist because there is no scientific model in terms of which to understand human will. Then, rather than pointing to reality which includes human will, reality has been changed to correspond to what known scientific models of it would have it be. Participants in reality not only perceive it, they create it, and make it become what it is seen to be. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
