The finite speed of light makes it impossible for us to learn all we might like to know about the "present" condition of distant parts of reality. Extreme gravitational fields generated by black-holes make it impossible for us to learn all we might wish to know about conditions within such estranged portions of reality. The extreme complexity of a human being makes it impossible via objective research techniques to appreciate fully the states of consciousness of such a limited portion of reality. If one accepts the essential limitations of objective research techniques and is willing to enter into intimate relations with real selves, then additional knowledge about others' states of consciousness become possible. Through dialogue which makes use of all available channels of communications selves may live more deeply rather than cease to live. Selves may reveal themselves in ways which others can not cause them to be revealed, thus transcending some of the limitations of revelation imposed by the techniques of objective research. Can a self reveal about self and others all of which self is aware? Is there an essential limitation on the possible degree of self revelation just as there are essential limitations on the possible degree of self revelation of the nature of reality in the world of 'I- It'? Are there corresponding limitations in the reality of 'I-Thou'? Needless to say an 'I' can not reveal to other in 'I- Thou' such objective information as is essentially impossible of knowledge through the techniques of objective research --- the 'I' knows-not such information and can not reveal it. But what of all that is "known" to 'I'; may it all be revealed? It seems unlikely because of the inadequacies of all channels of communication --- even taken collectively. Sometimes for self to speak a truth known to self --- even on request --- is to deny that which was true. There may be a limitation on the degree to which self may both know and shares much as in the principle of indeterminacy. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
