There may be agreement and concurrence. In such a context there are likely to be positive emotional responses and an inclination to participate in further transactions as opportunities arise. Transactions between two persons may be antagonistic and contribute to a mutual awareness of each other and possibly a mutual respect for each other. In dialogue there may develop an awareness of a disparity of understandings and efforts to change each other's understanding. In such conflict there may be positive emotional responses and an inclination to participate in further transactions as opportunities arise. Transactions between two persons may be antagonistic and generate very negative emotional responses, and so overt attempts at the destruction of each other. Even in such attempts (possibly successful) there may be authentic meeting of a perverted form. Transactions between two persons may be tangential in that they deny each other's reality in ways so covert as to be beyond effective defense. The messages may be so hidden as to be inaccessible to analysis, and so beyond defense. Sometimes to be ignored is far more damaging than to be attacked. An attack can be met and dealt with. It is virtually impossible to deal with associates who ignore you totally. It is even more impossible to deal with associates who ignore you while appearing to speak with you. The latter is one of the most dangerous forms of violence, because there is little defense against it. The self may become the victim of such tangential responses without an awareness of what is happening. Alienation in association with authoritarian role- playing is likely to generate tangential violence. Because of alienation there is a tendency to avoid authentic meeting and so authentic listening. An authority figure is likely to ignore what other has said (especially if it threatens his child) and give "responses" which are tangential to the original transaction of the other. Such a denial of the reality of the other can undermine the possibility of the development of an other's self-image which has integrity. The other may cease to live and merely metabolize. Science educators need to take care to avoid tangential responses to real students' questions. So long as scientists have the structure of science as their dominant focus, so long they will continue to respond tangentially to real students. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
