It has been the mutation characteristics of certain members of a species which have survived, by way of their ability to reproduce and pass on to their offspring a greater degree of adaptability (to the present environment) than that possessed by competing individuals. Mutations which reduce the likelihood of reproduction and/or limit adaptability have in general been mutations with low survival value--unless by unusual circumstance the environment has been particularly stable in its characteristics and very favorable to the given mutations. Considered in the perspective of the history of evolution of living beings we may well regard scientific analysis as a very recent mutation with an as yet in-doubt survival value. It is not yet clear that this sub-species will have greater (or less) survival-value. There are some suggestions that the sub-species which carries the mutation is less adaptable and less comfortable in the sexual states of consciousness necessary for reproduction and survival within viable communities. Some individual members of the sub-species may feel that they transcend the process of evolution in life forms, due to their high degree of specialization and their ability to get along without the companionship of others. This state of consciousness of course appears internally self validating. In previous instances of mutation, the change in one species has changed the environment which prevailed for other species. In the case of the mutation which produced modern technocrats the range of the impact on the environment is so great as to directly threaten the viability of most species. The mutation created a sub-species which specializes in analysis. Confronted by the problems created through analysis, the sub-species is by instinct going to analyze the situation, in an effort to bring it under full control. It is an open question as to whether the instinct which produced the situation can turn on itself and gain sufficient self-insight to transcend itself and transform itself so as to stop perpetuating the situation which threatens survival.
