This is certainly the case for the student trying for the first time the way of analytic thought with the assistance of symbolic tools such as algebra, calculus, and operator notations. The language is strange, and it takes time to becomes accustomed to it, and to become genuinely aware of the relationships to which it points. The ensymbolment of mathematics is used in pointing to realities of which the mathematician is aware. The non- mathematician is unaware of the realities and unfamiliar with the symbolism of mathematics. To such a person the symbolism of mathematics is a strange language. Yet with patience and with attention to the strange language and the realities to which it points, the seeker may become aware of the reality of the relation-ships characteristic of quantitative analysis. The scientist who is familiar with the language of mathematics may be rather unfamiliar with the language of intimate relationships and of the realities to which that language seeks to point. One can do only a finite number of things in a finite life. If one's attention is focused mostly on quantitative analysis there may not be time to focus on authentic meeting. If that be one's personal history, then one may well be relatively unaware of authentic meeting between real persons. The language of dialogue and its symbols will appear as a strange language. Scientists who are grasped by a desire to educate their students rather than driven by a compulsion to train students will find themselves trying new ways and using a strange language in pointing to realities which they come to recognize as significant. Other scientist are likely to regard such behavior as perverted, and estrange the physicists who participate in it. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
