If the self-image is essentially one of static identity then personal change is difficult if not impossible---until there is a change in the self- image. But the assumed self-image is of such a nature that it will resist any change in itself and so in the self. To help such a person grow, i.e., change, it is essential to facilitate a change in the self-image. Major changes are impossible at first. The way out is for self to experience external encouragement and support when even minor changes are attempted. Great hazards are not attempted unless emotional security is experienced in dealing with lesser hazards. Thus human growth is made possible by a fail-safe context. The self-image may lack integrity. It may shift back and forth between possibilities in a dynamic process which lacks coherence or stability---perhaps due to disparate messages recorded in earlier years of life. If the self-image is in dynamic stability then personal change will be the normal process. There can be genuine personal identity and integrity. Helpful science education involves the development of a dynamic self-image which differs from that typical of non-scientists. Individuals who start life with a static self-image will thus find it difficult to meaningfully participate in helpful science education. They may, however, submit to technical training and acquire well defined skills and bodies of knowledge--and thus become technicians or technocrats. For anyone to be a real person who is a creative scientist requires an integrity of self-image which is uncommon to date. The incarnation of a synthesis of rationality and arationality is rare. For this reason there are relatively few attractive scientists serving as teachers, and science courses attract relatively few real students. The improvement of science instruction will require non-technical solutions to human problems. The expenditure of scarce resources to implement technocrats' solutions to the problems of science instruction will not be helpful, but rather will intensify the technocratic society.
