It is recognized that in the press of daily duties there is inadequate time to maintain professional skills and keep up with developments relevant to instructional duties. In the sciences there is often a tendency for professors from liberal arts colleges to return to the university setting during sabbatical year programs. The intent is to renew the technical skills and knowledge of current developments which play no role in undergraduate instruction in liberal arts colleges. Even though such activities are valued highly by the liberal arts professor, there is inadequate time to engage in them, so such activities often constitute the dominant focus of sabbatical year programs. It is tragic that professors have yet to develop an adequate way of maintaining the tension between interest in research and interest in real students. In many instances the tension is relaxed through the development of subjective convictions and collusions to the effect that the focus of research deserves more concern than do real students. One of the ways this tension is relaxed is through the graduate school programs which train future college professors. The vast majority of the time is spent on the specialized content-matter of the department. Very little time is spent generating a concern for communicating effectively through dialogue and authentic meetings. Thus the newly trained college instructor has a dominant focus upon subject matter rather than upon honest dialogue with real students. By the time a sabbatical year comes, the instructor may have started to modify value judgments in favor of honest dialogue with real students. However, in many instances the sabbatical year is spent in a high powered research setting which renews the old state of consciousness and the value structure which leaves real students second best. Those who support sabbatical year activities of college professors would do well to meditate upon this reality of life as it touches real students. Sabbatical years should be occasions of liberation from out-of-date value judgments rather than occasions for re-indoctrination in them. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
