Success means different things to different people, in accordance with their different internalized self-images. Superficial success is easy to recognize; large income, living in the "right " neighborhood, parties with the "right" people, attention in the press, etc. Rarely are those who achieve such success satisfied therewith. They seek the hope and mean- ing of a more profound success. Profound success is difficult to define and more difficult to recognize. Making a helpful difference in the community life is not necessarily associated with any of the signs of superficial success. The profoundly successful person may not be known as such even by close associates --- yet be one of the most profoundly helpful persons known. The profoundly successful person may not be aware of self as such, and therein is a genuine difficulty. Often people seek to accomplish certain tasks. To accomplish each task it is necessary to be able to gauge progress towards the accomplishment, and make the necessary corrections in pace and direction in order to arrive at the destination, the accomplishment of the task. Implicit in this imagery is the recognition of successful completion of the task. Much of the motivation arises through the imagination and fantasy of the self seeing self as the fulfilled self upon accomplishing the goal. The feed-back loop of perception of progress and anticipation of consummation is a major source of motivation. If such a feed-back loop is broken for any reason, and so inoperative, then motivation is broken. Consider the consequences then of the profoundly successful person not being known as such by self and others---how then is the motivation feed-back loop to operate; or what is to be the primary source of motivation in the absence of that feed-back loop? Self and others need to consider this situation, and seek to be helpful in facilitating enduring motivation to be profoundly successful in helping others solve the real problems which are common to all real persons wherever they live in our small space-ship earth.
