Modern society includes some who affirm the values of rationality. Modern society also includes many persons who affirm values other than the values affirmed by those people who affirm the values of rationality. Let us call the first group the rationalists and the second group the arationalists. The arationalists are inclined to regard the rationalists as estranged from reality --- insofar as they are unresponsive to the full range of humane experiences, emotions, and communications. Attention is called to the inadequacy of pure rationality when it is cut off from primary humane sensory data and humane community. Arationalists are not likely to be precise in their verbal articulation and may misstate their concerns. The rationalists are inclined to regard the arationalists as unable to analyze relationships---insofar as they dismiss the importance of disciplined analytic procedures. Through lack of emotional security, the pure rationalists are likely to regard arationalists' affirmations as denials which threaten their own affirmations. The undisciplined arationalist is likely to be suspicious of the disciplined affirmations of rationalists, because the disciplined affirmations are made by persons who are often alienated from primary human sensory data and a humane community. The significant improvement of science education will be blocked until ways are found to bridge the barriers to understanding between rationalists and arationalists. It would be helpful for rationalists and arationalists to attend to each other's affirmations. Both need the freedom to see others pointing to realities which they are not familiar with.
