Real meanings are hidden in strings of words. Those who are able, use many large words such as "circumlocution" which parade an appearance of profundity, but in reality they often mask a lack of simple insight. Through the appearance of complexity (which is due to a lack of insight) the false impression is given that there is some kind of profound understanding. Those who are experts in the use of mathematical analysis and abstract ensymbolments use their techniques to excel in circumlocutions. Via the use of many tabulations and graphs it is possible to hide the human significance of tragic situations. It is possible to create an impression that there are no human decisions and actions which are the heart of the matter. Through techniques it is possible to make it appear that it is the economic system, the lack of money, the fuel shortage, the need for better transportation, the housing shortage, etc. which are the cause of human suffering. In this way one may avoid saying to others that they are being irresponsible, insensitive, thoughtless, selfish, narrow- minded, preoccupied with issues of control, etc. The responsibility for human problems can thus be shifted to abstractions, with which self can not cope. Self can not meet an abstraction. Plain talk is not possible for those who are estranged. Plain talk makes clear what the real issues are. Plain talk is possible in authentic meeting which gives participants a fail-safe context in which to work cooperatively on their real problems and dilemmas, even when other's real problems and dilemmas have called self to sacrifice and suffering. Plain talk is not possible if there is no forgiveness. Plain talk does not create appearances of complexity as a means to avoiding sacrifice and suffering. There are some situations which are complex and require complex means and techniques of analysis. One should not make a fool of oneself by trying to deal with complex situation through talk which does not have the power to solve real, complex technical problems. Neither should one suffer others to accept as profound--- circumlocutions which are created to avoid responsibility and authentic meetings. An effective liberal arts education will help students become wise and so know when to use plain talk; and when to use, in a helpful way, the techniques of scientific analysis. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
