One of the functions of a liberal arts college is to provide young people opportunities to transcend the traditional patterns of their family and community. It is hoped they will be liberated through an examination of a large number of life-styles and states of consciousness. It is difficult for someone who is unfamiliar with something---to help others gain familiarity with it. Thus it is difficult for adults who are not currently having any new experiences --- to help young people to have any new experiences, and to wisely internalize helpful interpretations of them. A large range of experiences in years past is not equivalent coping with experiences of new types in recent days. Thoughtlessly some people think that accumulated expertise is a good substitute for a present flexibility, willingness and the ability to respond wisely to new experiences. Students who attend liberal arts colleges are expected by their professors to encounter ideas and experiences that are totally new to them, and to cope with them---with few failures. Yet the professors are not likely to be themselves in comparable situations. Thus it is difficult for professors to empathize with students--- unless concern for real students is a major focus in their lives. It might be helpful for professors to take a course in some distinctly different department every few years--- just to maintain their ability to respond to new situations. The best place to find new situations is in real life. Thus one of the places which professors might profitable look for challenges to help them maintain their vitality---is within the community about them, and the real problems which typical persons encounter. Trying to put their own liberal arts education to use in real life is a good way of finding out what needs to be done to make their institution's program more helpful to students. By participating in community political action---professors will learn what intellectual skills will serve as agents of liberation for their students. The assertion of the long term value of intellectual knowledge can best be validated through helpful lives of those who make the assertion. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
