There are two united aspects to each. The first aspect of each is the other person(s) with whom the self enters into dialogues. The second aspect of each includes all of reality in which the self and other participate and find meaning. If the self and other be indifferent to each other as whole persons, the first aspect of mutual awareness is not fulfilled, and so the second aspect of mutual awareness is impossible; as is mutual understanding. If there be mutual consideration and caring on the part of the self and other --- the first aspect of mutual awareness may be fulfilled, but not necessarily the second aspect. The self and other may be mutually estranged from the rest of reality. They may enter into collusions which deny aspects of reality, and so make impossible a mutual awareness of those aspects of reality; e.g., cause and effect, objective analysis, principalities and powers, intimate relationships, souls, spiritual powers, real persons. If so, mutual awareness is only partial, and mutual understanding is impossible. Both aspects of mutual awareness may be fulfilled without analytic mutual understanding. Even then there may be a powerful mutual understanding with fulfillment of both of its aspects. Mutual awareness may be so complete that even without analysis there is mutual understanding and the power of human fulfillment. Analysis may make possible a tragic quality of mutual understanding which carries with it the power to produce changes in the self and other along with the rest of reality. Such mutual understanding may carry with it the seed of mutual estrangement of the self and other from each other and from (but while the victim of and within) the rest of reality. Men dying within this state of consciousness have brought to pass the environmental crisis---which is one with the crisis in affluence without human satisfaction and meaning. Scientists can not help students acquire a mutual understanding of the nature of natural processes without fulfillment of both of the above aspects of mutual awareness and mutual understanding. Because of this there will always remain an essential uncertainty. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
