On some occasions the message carried by the runner displeased the king, and as a result the runner lost his head. Perhaps as a result other messengers subsequently garbled the messages---in a effort to maintain their personal integrity. In out modern era the above situation does not occur often in exactly the same way. Yet, if we are free to see------ there are many occasions in which we treat messengers of trouble in an immature way---because we lack emotional maturity and the freedom to accept others with their real problems and dilemmas. It is sometimes difficult to recognize and honor messengers of trouble for the dangerous service they perform. The battle fields of today are not always geographic areas. The modern battle fields pertain to images of society, self, and other. We are engaged in battles over what it means to be a child, an adult, and a parent. There are contests over the development of techniques which are regarded as essential to attaining hope and meaning. There are contentions over rights, responsibilities---and over proper ways of setting priorities and what should be the dominant focus of our society. The list can easily be extended. Who then are the messengers of trouble, and in what way do we cause them to cease to live? The messengers of trouble from these battle fields---are those who through their best individual efforts fail-unsafe in their efforts to be real persons to the best of their abilities. They find themselves in can't win states of consciousness and in can't win contexts within the fragmented institutions of society. Most persons' typical response to such messengers is to block their communications, to ignore them, to put them out of sight and out of mind, to alienate them, to deny their reality. As a result they lose their integrity as of old. Such messengers are more commonly known as: thieves, alcoholics, murderers, rapists, bribers, arsonists, sexual swingers, racists, perjurers, drug pushers, technocrats, embezzlers, homosexuals, school drop-outs, insane persons, prostitutes, religious fanatics, etc. We would do well to attend to what these messengers of trouble have to tell us how we are faring on our modern battle fields; and grant them integrity through the exchanges of gifts of the freedom to be safely vulnerable in being true to self and grant them integrity.
