Behind that usage of the word is the root meaning of the word and the insight that people who don't have it "all together" behave in socially undesirable ways. People who have it "all together" tend to be gentle, humble, creative, considerate, loving, helpful, attractive----they are that way because of their integrity. Disparate messages recorded in our childhood's developmental stages sow the seeds for the breakdown of integrity. The child whose parent says nice words about curiosity and initiative, but who systematically puts down actual expressions of such by the child---thereby records in the child disparate messages which will come back to haunt the adult in later years. The emotions associated with the original situations may be relived without conscious recollection, and stifle expressions of curiosity and creativity, by destroying motivation, or by diverting it. Science teachers within the context of formal instruction may also contribute disparate messages to the student's record of life. Most often the disparate messages are communicated via contrasting channels of communication: explicit verbal, implicit verbal; absence of expected explicit verbal, absence of expected implicit verbal; eye contact, absence of eye contact; facial expressions, absence of facial expressiveness; posturing, body motion; touching, absence of touching; personal presence, personal absence, etc. Non-verbal messages are often more powerful than are verbal messages. If there is a lack of congruence between the various instructional messages---the integrity of the student is assaulted. The student is most vulnerable if unaware of the assault, dependent upon the assaulter, and/or relatively powerless compared to the assaulter. Persons may become freed from the power of recorded disparate messages to destroy their integrity---only with the development of mutual awareness and mutual understanding. With such freedom comes the power of the renewed adult to be creative, to take initiative, to ask new questions, to solve new problems, and to engage in helpful behavior. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
