Instincts by their nature are not rationalistic or intellectual, although in more complex organisms they may be recognized as associated with particular states of consciousness. Organisms which have survived are organisms of genetic codes for instincts which have survival value. It is the genetic codes which survive, not the individual organisms. This process has generated a generation of humans with many of the old instincts, but having also the instincts of individuation, analysis, ensymbolment, objectification, transcendence, self-awareness, self- righteousness, and arrogance. These new instincts complicate the operation of the traditional instincts of sexuality, commonality, affection, touching, violence, etc. It remains to be determined which instincts contribute most helpfully to survival value. Institutions designed to help young people acquire the liberation necessary for the survival of what the institutions represent---need to consider the role of instincts in the survival of the institution's alumni within their communal life. If college alumni do not have survival value, neither will their alma mater. If a college intellectually rapes its students, its students will not have survival value. If a college fails to help its students integrate rationality and arationality, its students will fail to live as liberated real persons with sufficient integrity to survive in a society accustomed to violence. Unless instinctive behavior and intellectual processes are integrated into whole persons, alumni will find it impossible to have powerful intentionality and thereby make helpful decisions and engage in helpful political action. In a technocratic society there is an unrecognized need for attractive scientists who have an integrity which unites instincts and analysis in a whole person who is committed to serving others who have real problems and dilemmas. Instincts alone often lead to senseless behavior. Analysis alone often leads to meaningless behavior. In either case people cease to live because of fragmentation. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
