In previous eras the lack of adequate and reliable information was a major bottle- neck in solving real problems. Those who experienced their childhood in such an era recorded the message that it is good to gather information. Now that they are engaged in political action, they are directing scarce public resources to the development of systems of techniques for the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and processing of a flood of information. Varieties of channels of communication and systems of ensymbolment are used. Too infrequently is there authentic meeting. The primary word 'I-Thou' is not spoken. There is little effective incarnation. Information processing (rather than real problem solving which touch real persons) becomes the ultimate concern of technocrats. Such is idolatry. Information dissemination has become a dominant focus of educational systems. Varieties of techniques are devised to maximize the amount of information poured into students. These involve students modifying the nature of real students, so that they will absorb a larger fraction of the authoritatively selected information. Via much television children learn to play a passive role in information reception. Television does not have the power of engaging real students in the dialogue of authentic personal meetings with reciprocal affective perceptions. In the absence of parents who are free to enter into dialogue regarding scientific perceptions of the nature of reality, television serves as the channel of communication of authoritarian perceptions of the nature of reality. Because of the nature of the channel of communication, authoritarian perceptions are communicated; but dialogue and education (educmement) are impossible because of the nature of the channel of communication. Information may be transmitted. Incarnations can not be transmitted via dialogue through one way television. Education is not the acquisition of information and skills. Education is the process of the growth of the self as a real student, a real person. Education is the process of incarnation. It can not be reduced to techniques. It can be reduced by techniques and preoccupations with techniques. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
