Yet, if a model is sufficiently like something else, the model may be helpful in facilitating a mutual understanding of that which it represents. In many instances a model is simpler than that which it represents. Via the simplicity, analysis is simplified and some of the essential features of that which is represented may become revealed by use of the model. Scientists make use of everyday situations as models in terms of which to understand more complicated situations which are encountered in scientific research. Scientists also make use of situations in elementary science---as models to facilitate the analysis of more complex situations. The life of scientists is full of models which help them understand complex processes, and so gain a deeper understanding of the nature of reality, through the analysis of cause and effect. When the scientist turns to highly complex situations---it is natural to seek to make use of the models which have been helpful in the less complex situations. The most complex situations which scientists encounter are those of human relationships in which personal reciprocal perceptions play an essential role. It is natural for scientists to thoughtlessly make use of models which have been helpful in the analysis of simpler situations. It is often difficult for scientists to recognize when the use of such models are or are not, helpful. The use of a model may dramatically change the perception of the nature of a reality. There is why models are often helpful. However, on many occasions an inappropriate model may so alter the perception of a reality---as to make it impossible to gain a helpful understanding of that reality. If a computer programmer regards his sexual partner as an automaton---and she/he is not one, then the model of automaton may so alter perception of her as to make authentic meeting impossible. If the science teacher regards a student only as a container for information in various forms of ensymbolment, then that model is not a helpful one. The avoidance of inappropriate models is not easy for persons who have narrow ranges of experience and with an awareness of only a few limited states of consciousness. The traditional models may encourage the continuation of collusions which render scientists unable to see and acknowledge the nature of real persons and real students. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
