The word, or its equivalent, may be spoken, but not in reality. To say hello in reality is the first step into authentic meeting. To speak only a conventional hello is a technique for avoiding authentic meeting. Because of human finitude authentic meeting is not always possible---and it is natural to sometimes speak only a conventional hello. When people speak hello only conventionally, they cease to live, for they cease to enter into authentic meetings. The direction of a trip is often indicated by the first step. If the direction is inappropriate, and there be no re-direction, then intense efforts may not be helpful. If there be no authentic hello in reality, then there is no first step into authentic meeting---and intense efforts and clever techniques will not be helpful. Only the whole real self can enter into authentic meeting, thus there is no technique for saying hello---for techniques are managed by the 'I' of 'I - It'. Through authentic meeting there may come integrity, and through integrity more authentic meetings. Clever techniques for the presentation of parts of the self often stand in the way of authentic meeting. Partial presentations are destructive of the integrity of meeting, and so stand in the way of authentic meeting. Thus authentic meetings take place only within fail-safe contexts. What you say after you say hello depends on how self and other say hello. If "hello" is spoken in part, by only part of the self and/or other---then the meeting is partial, and the dialogue is partial. A self, being willing to be known only in part, knows others only in parts, without integrity, and without authentic meeting. The nature of reality is then other than it might be, because of the nature of those participating in reality and because of the nature of their meeting. Without emotional security self maintains a state of consciousness in which there appear to be no essential uncertainties, yet there is only an appearance of full control. The first step toward the improvement of science education is to say hello in reality to real students, that they may become attractive scientists who can speak the primary word 'I-Thou' in true meeting.
