A few females who share these traits with males have asserted their rights and successfully entered into competition and overcome subtle forms of opposition to the presence of female scientists within the profession. Usually only the more masculine females are permitted to succeed. Their presence is not so threatening to the emotional security of other scientists- --as would be the presence of feminine scientists. Scientists who are not accustomed to intimate relationships and dialogue may not have the emotional security to respond with integrity to the sexual states of consciousness which the presence of feminine scientists might generate. The natural inclination is to avoid those possibilities. In many subtle ways attractive girls are discouraged from becoming professional scientists --- starting with the stories and illustrations in grade school readers and going on through job interview procedures. Some may regard this as an issue of human rights, with the emphasis on the rights of women to jobs in science. It is a human rights issue, but perhaps it would be helpful to let the focus be upon the rights of children to be free to grow in scientific behavior under the creative guidance of attractive scientists who are truly feminine---just as often as they are truly masculine. Because tradition excludes the former, so also is the latter excluded because of natural consequences. The rights of young children to humane instruction in science are not being fulfilled. The problem goes far deeper than the sex lives of those who teach science. It involves the over-all self-images of all scientists with respect to what it means to be human and finite, to be helpful as a scientist. It will be difficult to encourage the development of attractive scientists so long as attractive feminine girls experience discrimination relative to analytic boys and girls with respect to science and all relationships between the student and science. So long as science and technology are dominated by men who are embarrassed feminine scientists working with them, so long will science and technology tend to work to intensify the technocratic society, with all its dehumanizing aspects.
