One of the lessons that science students all too often learn is that to do science one must have "authentic" scientific equipment. "Science is something that is done with professionally manufactured scientific equipment". Many times because of the accuracy syndrome there are requirements that equipment be very complex and very costly. This may be profitable to some manufacturers, but it is not profitable to students. Because of the equipment syndrome the student may learn that science does not pertain to their analysis of the objects and processes of daily life. Science does not pertain to the operation of home appliances, automobiles, public utilities, industrial processes, public transportation, etc. Science pertains to the in school use of equipment especially designed to illustrate isolated theoretical principles. The student thus learns that science is a fragmenting activity. Because of the accuracy syndrome instructors sometimes demonstrate great cleverness in the design and manufacture of sophisticated equipment to reduce as much as possible measurement errors in experiments designed to validate the authorities' theoretical predictions. The students learn that their instructors are clever and that they, the students, are not so clever. They gain a self- image as being incompetent. Because of the stock of equipment which has been purchased, it is "important" to be sure that students deal with old questions which the equipment was designed to answer. For this reason it is impractical to organize science courses around new questions which real students ask. Courses are organized around questions pertaining to the relevant fundamentals as perceived by theory oriented instructors. The improvement of science instruction depends on finding ways of providing real students with incarnations of scientific behavior solving real problems in a way which shows the importance of relevant fundamentals and the importance of real problems. This may be done by attractive scientists who know how to appeal to real students as whole persons in search of bases for wise decisions and action. Renewal will start with a shift of dominant focus from equipment and theory to real students in dialogue. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
