Small organisms embody insufficient complexity to undergo the complex internal changes which may be associated with the development of much understanding. Extremely small portions of reality undergo such extreme changes upon being perceived---that the reality of this essential uncertainty is pointed to by the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Large organisms may through specialization of body function embody sufficiently flexible complexity to undergo the complex internal changes which may be associated with the development of much understanding, biological ensymbolment of perception and the essentially private sequences of states of consciousness consequent to them. Through dialogue many such organisms may embody higher degrees of complexity and flexibility---to facilitate higher levels of mutual understanding, in proportion to the ease and fidelity of exchange of information regarding differing states of consciousness. Through mutual awareness, the mutual understanding may increase in proportion to the complexity and honest intimacy of the community. The perplexity of the situation is increased---if the focus of attention is directed to within an isolated agent of understanding. For, in that instance, the process of understanding may modify itself in such a way as to confuse itself. Regardless of the size of the organism (or community of organisms) there can not therein be embodied sufficient complexity to permit a full understanding of self as regards relations within self, and in relation to, the rest of reality. There is a self- understanding uncertainty-principle which is an essential aspect of reality---and which plays an important role in dialogue, mutual understanding, hope, and meaning. Entering into collusions will destroy possibilities for mutual understanding; possibilities which transcend those possible within the collusions, but which yet do not equal those presumed to be possible by participants in the collusions. The scientist who seeks to escape from the essential uncertainties of real life in authentic personal meanings, can do so only by withdrawing from participation in reality which might change self. Without mutual awareness there can not be mutual understanding, hope, or meaning. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
