Commitments are not intellectual acts, but acts of emotional involvement and will. Commitments are not the consequences of rational analysis, but of being profoundly touched---even though often in perverted ways. The child makes commitments through emotional responses to parents and others. Commitments once made in reality are quite permanent--- and realize their implications through the sacrifice and suffering of the self that fulfills them. Some commit themselves to the acquisition for self and tribe of things, position, power, information, knowledge, affection, transcendence, etc. Others commit them-selves to the acquisition for others of similar possessions. All such persons find it essential to participate in the accumulation and use of clever techniques of manipulation, including the manipulation of truth about self and other, and about the nature of reality. Through such participation collusions become essential---and the manipulator finds self among those manipulated by the used techniques. In a futile effort to avoid such a trap, some people commit themselves to the pure search for truth without respect for other consequences---hoping thereby to avoid all deception. But such a commitment is based upon the unexamined assumption that truth can be known academically and intellectually without doing the truth. The commitment is based upon the notion that complete objectivity is possible through detachment, and that there are no essential uncertainties or paradoxes. Thus such a commitment can lead to violence to the essential uncertainties of personhood and real persons who may be caused to cease to live through objectification and analysis by self and other---of self and others. A commitment to openness need not lead into such traps, and so has greater survival value. Those who are committed to openness are free to choose dialogue, authentic meeting, and intimate relationships---because such a commitment on the part of self and others generates a fail-safe context within which the truth is known through its incarnation in those who realize the truth by doing it.
