In that world cause and effect are known to determine all processes, but hope and meaning are unknown. The arationalist who ignores cause and effect and tries to cope only in the eternal now---will not discern the patterns of many processes, and so become the victim of the mysterious processes of reality in which he participates and finds hope and meaning. In his world cause and effect are unknown, yet hope and meaning may be real. The causal rationalist operating as an annalist approaches reality as: (1) A knowable past, (2) A non- existent non-durational instant between the past and the future, and (3) A predictable future which is but the fulfillment of trends discernible in the past. The dominant focus is the past, and the future it will cause. Decisions and actions which transcend cause and effect are not---by the authority of an effective collusion. Thus, there is little effective political action directed towards being helpful to humans in need. The arationalist living as a personalist focuses on authentic meeting which exists in the eternal now which escapes ensymbolment---and is one with the realities of the past---and one with the source of hope for satisfaction and meaning in the future which is present in authentic meeting. Hope and meaning can be found within the processes which are perceived without full control, yet are participated in through decisions and actions which are political action to meet human needs. Salvation is not achieved through the use of techniques (based on cause and effect) to solve human problems. Hope comes not through the knowledge of a certain future fulfilling trends dictated by cause and effect. Human meaning is not found in objective understanding. Wonder and the mysteries of the nature of reality will endure through the essential uncertainties manifest in the limitations of science. There may be hope in attractive scientists who with integrity can be the incarnation of the most ways that rationalists and arationalists have to offer. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
