To accept other's acceptance of self "without other's acceptance being based upon mutually accepted standards of personal acceptability--- constitutes a betrayal of self's dedication to maintaining standards of good and evil through the use of techniques. Such a healthy betrayal becomes possible only when the divided self experiences a high level of awareness of the futility of trying to use techniques to attain righteousness---as the means to the creation of healthy human community. Self's fear of losing full control is reduced by a growing awareness that self never has full control. Self's fear of being found-out for what self really is, is reduced by an awareness of the possibility of a fail- safe context which transcends the presumption of the knowledge of good and evil. It is impossible to conceive such a fail-safe state of consciousness---while comfortably within the self-righteous technocratic state of consciousness. However, through engulfment the former may redeem the latter. Such engulfment is the terrifying miracle of salvation. The estranged seek to avoid it--- while seeking that which they know not. Those who seek full control are not free to see and to be true to themselves and others in trying new ways. For within their state of consciousness there is no fail- safe state of consciousness, and trying new ways involves all the hazards of failure; which for technocrats include not only the natural consequences of failure---but also the intensification of alienation and estrangement. In this way curiosity, initiative, and creativity cease to live; for through them self may lose full control. Thus dialogue is often reduced and people cease to live. Techniques replace authentic meeting. Games are played-- -and people lose vitality. There is no way of guaranteeing a liberal education. The freedom to see through the collusions of those who presume to the knowledge of good and evil---and so the freedom to accept acceptance---comes only through the miracle of authentic meeting in the eternal now. Science improvement programs which ignore these realities are, as always, doomed to failure and to lead to the intensification of alienation and of the technocratic society. (c) 1999 by Paul A.
