In 1934 the writer of almost all  of the essays in this web site; was Born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America to evangelical              
Presbyterian  missionary parents.   In Medeleine, Colombia, South America, he learned Spanish from his playmates on "Pole" street and could    
look out over all of the big city below, from the side of a mountain range at the edge of the city. He learned about conflicts  between        
religious groups, Spanish-People and  the rich U.S.A. of his parents to the north. His gracious mother, who home schooled him through second   
grade into reading and into very early arithmetic skills - - - died in 1942. His father married  a high-school sweetheart and school teacher;  
as yet not married, and willing to help  raise the five present children who were about ages 3 to 12 years; one more child was added; and all  
children engaged far into higher educational training, teaching and/or research.   His father served as a pastor in Presbyterian churches in   
the USA Mid-West with conflicts over the presence of a few black people and many theological differences!                                      

The writer began his extensive writing, with a significant background as an astronomer.  He built his own six inch in diameter reflecting      
telescope during early high school years in Geneseo, Illinois,  with encouragement-by-mail from his uncle, Joseph D. Brubaker who, with only   
a high school education and with telescope building as an amateur - - - built one of the  earliest cameras - - - to take pictures through      
people's  esophagus, though a rigid stainless  steel tube - - - through-which light went in - - - and through which the light for the picture  
came back out - - via appropriate lenses and mirrors - - - to an external camera focused properly.                                             

Then the writer had dealings with three college/university Instructional-Astronomical-Observatories, and on invitation, taught modern astronomy
laboratory sessions for one of the leading Atomic Scientist, Dr. Edward U. Condon; and on-invitation taught two summer university modern       
astronomy courses, which just previously had been taught by Dr. James van Allen, the early leading-astro-physicist, in Van Allen Hall, the     
physics building at the University of Iowa.  Thus,  the writer's  central cosmological perspectives  are unusual,   compared to the usual      
perspectives;  of most well educated people overall.  The writer also began writing essays; within the framework of extensive political-and-   
religious leadership-experiences.

            FOLLOWING BELOW ARE INDICATIONS OF THE WRITER'S ACTIVITIES  - - DURING APPROXIMATE-YEARS:   

1952-1956  At Park College; now Park University, Majored in Philosophy-AND-Physics, studying under      
           William B. Easton; a close early friend of major theologian Paul Tillich in the U.S.A.       
           Was "House-Boy" to the wife of the President of the College in their home, and occasionally  
           drove their two daughters to the same grade school which he attended as a fourth grader.     
           Later  was in charge of the astronomical observatory with its 8 inch in diameter refractor.  
           He was a chair of the Student-Body "Academic Problems Committee" - - - reporting students'   
           difficulties with some members of the faculty - - - to the President of the college Dr.      
           Zwingle who had been the head of the USO of the United States of America during World-War-   
           Two.                                                                                         

1956-1958  At Washington University in Saint Louis, earned a Master's Degree  in Physics and did        
           volunteer work on radioactive fallout onto the USA from atomic bomb testing.                 
           When the "Saint Louis Committee for Nuclear Information" was announced on a two              
           page center-fold-spread in the "Saint Louis Post Dispatch" - - - there were in               
           it two pictures of me with the equipment he used to filter air for 24 hours each             
           day to gather radioactive fallout right out of the air.  The filters were burned             
           and the contained radioactive fallout's amount he measured with a standard Geiger            
           Counter and he plotted the rise and fall of activity following atomic bomb-tests             
           in the U.S.A. South-West and in the Pacific island.   The activity was comparable            
           to that in a radioactive-luminous-watch.                                                     

           He was also among the early Sputnik observers to report times and locations among            
           the constellations of Sputnik to the national spotting network, and soon received            
           frequent predictions of its future passages over St. Louis - - - to encourage and            
           facilitate the taking time to send in more reports of its passages; to facilitate            
           the Americans' study of its orbit.

           In August of 1958 Paul married Margaret McCluggage in the small  Chapel-by-the-Lake in Auke  
           Bay, Alaska near Juneau, Alaska; in sight of the Mendenhall Glacier.  Margaret was a founding
           member of the Presbyterian Church that built the Chapel-By-the-Lake with logs from trees cut 
           in the woods nearby by members of the congregation. Margaret's father, Randolph McCluggage,  
           was the founding pastor.     Paul and Margaret met at Park College in Parkville, Missouri.   
           Margaret completed her AB degree in French and Spanish in the spring of 1958.  She           
           was working summers in the Alaska Historical Museum in Juneau, the capitol of Alaska - - -   
           originally settled during the Alaska Gold Rush.                                              

1959-1964  Paul and Margaret were involved in Civil-Rights-Demonstrations for Black-Americans in the    
           town of Medford, MA; of Paul Revere Fame.  They lived in Somerville right next to the campus 
           of Tufts University where Paul earned a Doctorate Degree in Nuclear Physics under Dr. Jack   
           Schneps using the photographic emulsion technique to measure lifetimes of lambda particles in
           the nuclei of "HYPER-FRAGMENTS".  Margaret had gotten a job in the Tufts University Library  
           without having an in-person-interview, and without formal training as a librarian! When snow 
           storms isolated the campus,   Margaret and one other Librarian   kept the library open as the
           only staff members who got there.   Margaret and Paul   were for 5 years members of FIRST-   
           CHURCH, Cambridge; THE-FIRST-CHURCH-EVER in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  That one congregation 
           founded   Harvard  University - - - across the Cambridge Commons,  from the church building. 
           HARVARD   is  still there!   In 1960,  FIRST-CHURCH installed its 13th pastor!               

1962       Paul was drafted to be the Leader of a three-day Peace-March from the Boston Commons  to the 
           Nuclear Submarine Base at Groton Connecticut; giving  Joan Bayes permission   to sing at the 
           send off because Joan's Father was very enthusiastically persuasive in saying that Joan most 
           wanted to sing at the send-off worship service,   at the  Quaker-Meeting-House which is near 
           the historic home of Longfellow!   About one year later,  Joan Bayes    softened the tone of 
           the March on Washington; by singing "We Shall Overcome" from the podium;   from which Martin 
           Luther King gave his most memorable speech. Joan Bayes may have been the only female-presenter
           at that historic gathering that filled THE WASHINGTON D.C. MALL.                             
           
1964       Paul became Assistant Professor of Physics at Coe College, in Cedar Rapids,Iowa; serving with
           Dr. Joe Kasper, a student of Dr. James van Allen, for whom earth's radiation belts are named.
              
           His first year at Coe he was the chairman of the "Institutional Research Committee"; but the 
           college was not really ready for faculty members to do research on the very difficult policy 
           issues which faced most colleges then.  Such research had to wait for two years!             

1967       Paul wrote a successful grant proposal to the National Science Foundation to start a college 
           Computer Center with an IBM 1130 Main-Frame-Computer with 12,000 fast memory-bytes and 0.5   
           Megabytes of slow disk-memory-bytes; an input-keyboard, computer-keypunched-deck-reader,     
           keypunched-deck-output, two manual-keypunch-machines to prepare punched-input-decks to load  
           commuter programs into the IBM 1130 Computer.  Coe College's computer when acquired was more 
           powerful than what Tufts University, were Dr. Smith did his doctoral research; had at that   
           time.   The above initial computer equipment for Coe College cost about  $64,000 DOLLARS.    

1968       Paul was the Secretary of a college committee charged with RE-INVENTING THE CORE NATURE      
           of Coe College in 1968 - - - a successful venture with loosened graduations requirements,    
           a new calendar and an increased emphasis on a new advising and counseling center.  The plans 
           called for the creating of a new Core-Course Requirement for Graduation; two terms long.     
           positions  on relevant academic committees at Coe College in about 1970. Students also became
1970s      Paul began  to be involved  in "academic-politics"  and  "physics-politics-about integrating 
           women-into-physics-studies" in colleges and universities; now done well at Coe College. Since
           1970 the Coe College Undergraduate Physics Department has evolved into being the world's most
           active UNDERGRADUATE-PHYSICS-GLASS-RESEARCH-CENTER, with women approaching being one-third of
           the majors in physics.  Each year there are three to four dozen UNDERGRADUATES engaged in    
           visit Coe College during summers to engage in physics research.                              

           Paul stimulated the use of digital computers at Coe College and within Physics Departments   
           in colleges and universities in the U.S.A.                                                   

           Helped to get students involved in campus politics, by helping to get students into voting   
           positions on the Computer-Policies-Committee which was created to assure that the computer   
           was primarily used to serve students' educational needs under the terms of the NSF Grant.    
           Later students were invited by members of the Board of Trustees to attend certain meetings of
           the Board of Trustees.                                                                       

           Paul was the Secretary, for a few years, of the Iowa Section of the American Association of  
           University Professors, "AAUP" which is concerned nationally, with Academic-Integrity.

           Paul entered "secular-political-party-politics", within the Iowa Democratic Party;  reforming
           its State-Wide  FIRST-IN-THE-NATION  Caucus-Convention-Processes; Paul served as Secretary of
           a few committee on Constitutional Amendments and Comprehensive-Updates all of FOUR LEVELS of  
           the infamous Iowa Democratic Party's   CAUCUS-CONVENTION-PROCESS - - -  putting the power to 
           select delegates-to-the-next-stage of the CAUCUS-CONVENTION-PROCESSES into the hands of the  
           individual delegates;  and out-of-the-hands of entrenched Political-Party-Leaders in Smoke-  
           Filled-Back-Rooms.  Paul served as Secretary/Chairman of Committees on Rules-and-Nominations 
           at: almost all of his own: Precinct-Caucuses, County-Conventions, District-Conventions and   
           State-Conventions; every two years during 1974 - 2004.  He also often served as the Secretary
           and/or Parliamentarian of many: County-Conventions, District-Conventions and State-Conventions
             which he attended
           and State Conventions he attended every two years.  He drove about 25,000 miles back and forts
           between Cedar Rapids, Iowa    and  Des Moines, Iowa where most of the meetings were held.

           Dr. Smith had served Coe College as: the Chairman/Administrator of an unpopular Reading-     
           Program regarding a GRADUATION REQUIREMENT - - which was phased out;  the Library-Committee, 
           On the Core-Course-Creation Committee; facilitating a new GRADUATION REQUIREMENT, a new      
           Students-Evaluations-of-Faculty-Committee,   The Petitions-Committee,   Faculty-Evaluation-  
           of  THE-President-Committee; and for half a year as Secretary of the Faculty.                

           Dr Smith got a big compassionate Teamsters' Union-Leader, to intervene on behalf of a        
           college's female janitor being sexually harassed - - - while her harassers were being        
           protected by powerful college officials.   She was also being harassed at home! The          
           Teamsters' Union replaced an impotent-indifferent-union.   Ultimately the victim and her     
           husband, took the writer and his wife out to dinner - - - as an expression of appreciation   
           for helpful interventions at home and at work.                                               

           Dr. Smith was the Iowa Representative on National Council of the American Association        
           of Physics Teachers, for about a dozen consecutive years ~ 1972 - 1984.  In October of 1983  
           he went with a couple dozen members of the American Association of Physics Teachers to visit 
           with Professors of Physics in major university physics departments in both Russia and China. 
           The may have been one of the larger delegations to visit both Russia and China as  the COLD- 
           WAR-STARTED TO THAW.  For Paul friendships evolved with a Chinese Electrical Engineer and a  
           friend of his who was the granddaughter of the last Magician to an Emperor of China.         
 
           Dr. Smith was the Secretary of the Iowa Democratic Party during 1974-1978,  and then until   
           about 2004 was secretary and/or Chair of many Convention-Rules/Nominations-Committees and    
           Constitution-Revision-Committees; playing key roles in fine-tuning the Iowa-Caucus-Convention
           Process that plays a leading role in nominating Democratic Presidential Candidates each      
           four years; for the United States of America. ( There are meetings at precinct-caucuses,     
           county-levels, Congressional-District-Levels and at the State-as-a-Whole level - - - every   
           two years!) With one exception Smith was a significant leader at all four levels during 1974-
           2004 while transitioning into living in Colorado after retiring in about 1999.  Driving around
           Iowa to and from such meetings probably totaled about 25,000 miles during 1973 - 2004.            

1973           Dr. Smith was on his first sabbatical in the fall/winter and according to formal plans:                          
           
           (a) Created software to facilitate the input of physics-lab-data into computer programs on   
               the IBM 1130 - - - with the data being punched into cards in a FORMAT-FREE-MANNER.  The  
               data was appropriately "analyzed" - - - yielding printed numerical reports.              
           
           (b) Visited about a dozen physics department on college/university campuses within easy one- 
               day-driving distances of Coe College; visiting with physics staff-members, Deans and/or 
               Presidents - - - as available. The effort was designed to gain an overview of what was   
               happening in small university and small college physics departments.  Interviews were    
               tape recorded.                                                                           

           (c) Wrote about 260 train-of-consciousness essays pertaining to the Crisis-in-Physics-       
               Teaching due to the levels of alienation between physics teachers/professors and physics 
               students in general, but  especially  due to  the levels of  alienation  between physics 
               teachers/professors and female students.  Those initial essays were made  available on   
               campus; but only a few undergraduate female students offered any spontaneous feedback to 
               the contents of the original set of essays! More essays were written and extra credit was
               offered to many Modern-Astronomy-Class-Students; more authentic-feed-back was elicited in
               that way. For many years when you went to check out anything from the Coe College Library
               NO library materials were visible straight-ahead;  EXCEPT  FOR   annual   collections  of
               essays!  Adults never offered any significant-feed-back about the contents-of-the-essays!

           (d) During the following years of significant feed-back from students, the writing of essays 
               continued; with the encouragement of students and the help of females who volunteered to 
               help as paid-secretarial-workers - - - entering/editing texts of essays in the  magnetic 
               media and/or initiating the creation of the web site now at www.essayz.com - - initiated 
               by a woman starting in the middle of her freshman year, and working more than five years 
               on the effort.
               

           During 1974 Dr. Smith started including on a regular basis, teaching  a bit about the coming 
           exhaustion of all FOSSIL-FUELS and the coming DRAMATIC-CLIMATE-CHANGES in   two   to   three 
           MODERN ASTRONOMY classes each years, of about 40 students in each class. Such considerations 
           were virtually NEVER in the public media of those years!                                     

1978       Dr. Smith was a member of the   National Democratic Party's     National-Platform-Committee  
           in 1978; and championed, with success, affirmations of "Priority-Voting" on platform planks  
           in the Iowa Democratic Party and   at a   National   Mid-Term-Off-Election-Year Convention.  
           Sometimes he was given excessive-powers - - - without public controversy!   On the National  
           Democratic Platform Committee during 1978 he successfully introduced  a  few  amendments in  
           committee, including one calling attention to the concentration of  rare minerals  in South  
           Africa - - -  when the dominant whites were mistreating the native blacks in South Africa.   
 
1980       Dr. Smith initiated a workshop on the Platform Process and Priority-Voting; at a Mid-Term-   
           National-Convention of the USA Democratic Party.                                             

1983       Dr. Smith participated in a USA People-to-People Good-Will trip - with two dozen leading     
           American  physicists - - visiting many Russian and Chinese University-Physics-Departments.   
           and comparing traditions in the training of the next generation of physicists.               
 
1985       Dr. Smith gave his astronomy students opportunities to earn extra points by reading essays   
           that were made available "on reserve" in the Coe College Library at the only check-out-desk  
           for check-out for a few days. The essay-sets were bound-by-years in which they were written. 
           Other reserve materials were shelved on book-cases facing toward each other and not visible  
           to people at the check-out-desk! Only Dr. Smith's Bound-Essay-Volumes were visible to people 
           checking out any library resources!  The selves that the essays were on, were empty, except  
           for them!  It was an interesting way to display the essasy!   Students offered interesting   
           personal responses to diverse essays.                                                        
           
           Later the essays were made available on a local Coe Computer-Network; via computer terminals 
           that were available  to students in the library, and students used them as above. Even Later,
           computer terminals became available all across campus and in dorm rooms.  For many years the 
           students offered interesting personal comments  on many essays that balanced the technical   
           aspects of the modern astronomy course!  By 1994 the essays had grown to thousands; and were 
           made available on the WORLD-WIDE-WEB at www.essayz.com in about 1994 - - -  at the imitative 
           of a first year supportive female student who had volunteered to do editorial work entering  
           essays into magnetic media her first semeter at Coe College, and then took an EXPLORATORY-   
           TERM-COURSE on how to create new wed-sites in January of here freshman year.  She suggested  
           that she create a web site on which to make all of the essays available; there was one con-  
           ference with Dr. Smith about how overall to structure the web-site - - - and no follow up    
           conference.   By the end of her freshman year the new web-site was functional.  She worked   
           on expanding the web-site as regards texts and support web-pages during the following years  
           as a stuent at Coe College, summers, and even after she graduated.                           

1990       Dr. Smith was successful in introducing priority voting on platform planks into the Platform 
           Process of the Iowa Democratic Pary during the late 1990's; and was highly honored for that  
           success along with two other leaders in the process.  Hilary Clinton, was the main speaker.  
           Dr. Smith, in accepting the award, spoke right after Hilary Clinton.  The award winners and
           their guests were seated at an awards table at the front and center of the meeting room with 
           approaching 1,000 people at the banquet.  Because Dr. Smith's wife Margaret had her own very 
           important meeting to attend that night,  Dr. Smith had as his guest a young woman who had    
           lead sub-committees of conventions' Committees-on-Rules-and-Nominations - - - counting the   
           votes of delegates at County, District and State Conventions in which she had participated.  

           Dr. Smith was involved in supporting the helpful use at Coe College of the "Joint-Statement- 
           of-Students-Rights" endorsed by many national organizations, including the "AAUP" for  which 
           he had served for a time, as the Secretary of the Iowa Chapter of the American Association   
           of University Professors in American Colleges and Universities across the nation.            

1991       Dr. Smith began hiring Coe College students well paid for editorial work on entering thousands
           of his essays from typed-paper-copies into magnetic media.  An amazing woman from India - - - 
           started the process by volunteering to work on "the essays-project" - - during the summer that
           followed her junior year, her first "job".  She also worked during her senior year. She needed
           only two hours of sleep a night, and worked nights! She woman was followed by a woman from the
           Orient who also offered to work, and did.   Four other diverse women  volunteered and/ or were
           recommended; including  an artist, a business major,  a sociology major, etc.   Their   wishes
           regarding the natures of our affective personal relationships were carefully observed/respected
           within our broader social settings!                                                           

           One freshman woman was hired very early in her freshman year. She took a "January-Term-Course"
           on creating web-sites on the world-wide-web; and soon there-after she suggested that we create
           a website on which to publish all of the essays,   which were at that time on magnetic media; 
           about 3,000 essays.  There was one subsequent conference, in which the broad structure of the 
           web-sit was sketched out.  Without further consultations she in fact  had the first version of
           essayz.com functioning by the end of her freshman year,  and worked faithfully  for five years
           on expanding it. Other women provided additional personal support during the evolution  of the
           essays-system which is now at the web ite www.essayz.com with over 10,000 essays with hundreds

           An amazing famous-female-magician from-the-Orient,   also played a role   in encouraging the  
           essays project.  She played one of the four lead roles in an American movie about four perhaps
           fictional Chinese Women - - - who were early leaders in asserting women's rights.              

   1993    Dr. Smith was a presenter at an International-Conference in Brussels, Belgium, in June, 1993:     
           "Einstein-Meets-Magrite"; presenting an early version of This-Essays-System on 3 inch             
           computer disks; giving out a 50 copies thereof to interested young participants; as befitting     
           the themes  of the conference described in the clickable links below.   About  400 academic       
           leaders  from about 45 nations were present at the international  conference; that  focused       
           upon making our modern civilization more Long-Term-Sustainable; as-seen-now. The presenters       
           included: Musicians , Poets,  Physicists,   Computer-Experts,  Anthropologists, Economists,       
           Medical-  Doctors, Dramatists, etc.                                                               

           ALL ARRANGEMENTS WITH PRESENTERS were accomplished over the early evolving World-Wide-Web.

           The above conference was held on the Dual-Campus of "New-University, Brussels", which was celebrating its 50th 25th Anniver-
           sary.  On the same campus there is a USA Style University  where the conference was held; AND  a FRENCH Style University.   
 
           Before the conference started, Dr. smith inquired of another man in attendance what his specialty was.  The man responded   
           "Academic Politics".  He was there to see how the politics of the conference played out!   The president of the university  
           expected  a  noted lead physicist to bring together a very traditional gathering to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the   
           university.  Instead it was a gathering of academics from over a dozen disciplines and about four dozen nations; talking    
           about how to help the world make a transition to a long-term-sustainable civilization!  The strange absence was that there  
           was no significant presence of people from Arabic nations.  The clickable links below here will give further information.   

           The opening of the conference was a conversation between "People in a French bar" about some of the issues of the day.      
           Dr. Smith happened to be seated next to a woman who had delivered the script to the actors within the past hour!  At one    
           point while on stage after a presentation to talk to a presenter, another presenter turned to Dr. Smith and invited him to  
           go out for lunch.  The  man was Dr. Zimon who had written a text book called "Electrons and Phonons" which Dr. Smith had    
           studied for two years at Tufts University; about quantized interactions between quantized electrons and quantized sound-    
           radiation/vibrations; as in electronic circuit boards.  Dr. Zimon was noted in Great Britain for working to promote social  
           responsibility among scientists.   Dr. Smith had significant occasions to know three of the top "Atomic Scientists" who     
           played key roles in creating the first three atomic bombs: Doctors:  A. H. Compton and E. U. Condon at Washington University
           in Saint Louis, and Dr. Bernard Feld of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while Dr. Smith was doing his doctoral    
           research on the lifetimes-of-hyperfragments in photographic emulsion-sheets - - - about one millimeter thick; exposed at the
           Beaverton at Berkeley, CA and at the Alternating "Gradient Synchrotron Long, Island. It was a sobering experience to get to 
           know those three men in rather personal ways! Needless to say the experience deeply influenced the writing of essays many   
           years later.  In a less direct ways, Dr. Smith worked often with John Ely in Cedar Rapids, IA. John knew Albert Einstein
