In 1934 the writer of almost all of the essays in this web site; was Born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, South America to evangelical Presbyterian missionary parents. In Medeleine, Colombia, South America, he learned Spanish from his playmates on "Pole" street and could look out over all of the big city below, from the side of a mountain range at the edge of the city. He learned about conflicts between religious groups, Spanish-People and the rich U.S.A. of his parents to the north. His gracious mother, who home schooled him through second grade into reading and into very early arithmetic skills - - - died in 1942. His father married a high-school sweetheart and school teacher; as yet not married, and willing to help raise the five present children who were about ages 3 to 12 years; one more child was added; and all children engaged far into higher educational training, teaching and/or research. His father served as a pastor in Presbyterian churches in the USA Mid-West with conflicts over the presence of a few black people and many theological differences! The writer began his extensive writing, with a significant background as an astronomer. He built his own six inch in diameter reflecting telescope during early high school years in Geneseo, Illinois, with encouragement-by-mail from his uncle, Joseph D. Brubaker who, with only a high school education and with telescope building as an amateur - - - built one of the earliest cameras - - - to take pictures through people's esophagus, though a rigid stainless steel tube - - - through-which light went in - - - and through which the light for the picture came back out - - via appropriate lenses and mirrors - - - to an external camera focused properly. Then the writer had dealings with three college/university Instructional-Astronomical-Observatories, and on invitation, taught modern astronomy laboratory sessions for one of the leading Atomic Scientist, Dr. Edward U. Was "House-Boy" to the wife of the President of the College in their home, and occasionally drove their two daughters to the same grade school which he attended as a fourth grader. The filters were burned and the contained radioactive fallout's amount he measured with a standard Geiger Counter and he plotted the rise and fall of activity following atomic bomb-tests in the U.S.A. South-West and in the Pacific island. The activity was comparable to that in a radioactive-luminous-watch. He was also among the early Sputnik observers to report times and locations among the constellations of Sputnik to the national spotting network, and soon received frequent predictions of its future passages over St. Louis - - - to encourage and facilitate the taking time to send in more reports of its passages; to facilitate the Americans' study of its orbit. In August of 1958 Paul married Margaret McCluggage in the small Chapel-by-the-Lake in Auke Bay, Alaska near Juneau, Alaska; in sight of the Mendenhall Glacier. Margaret was a founding member of the Presbyterian Church that built the Chapel-By-the-Lake with logs from trees cut in the woods nearby by members of the congregation. Margaret's father, Randolph McCluggage, was the founding pastor. Paul and Margaret met at Park College in Parkville, Missouri. Margaret completed her AB degree in French and Spanish in the spring of 1958. She was working summers in the Alaska Historical Museum in Juneau, the capitol of Alaska - - - originally settled during the Alaska Gold Rush. 1959-1964 Paul and Margaret were involved in Civil-Rights-Demonstrations for Black-Americans in the town of Medford, MA; of Paul Revere Fame. They lived in Somerville right next to the campus of Tufts University where Paul earned a Doctorate Degree in Nuclear Physics under Dr. Jack Schneps using the photographic emulsion technique to measure lifetimes of lambda particles in the nuclei of "HYPER-FRAGMENTS". Margaret had gotten a job in the Tufts University Library without having an in-person-interview, and without formal training as a librarian! When snow storms isolated the campus, Margaret and one other Librarian kept the library open as the only staff members who got there. Margaret and Paul were for 5 years members of FIRST- CHURCH, Cambridge; THE-FIRST-CHURCH-EVER in Cambridge, Massachusetts. That one congregation founded Harvard University - - - across the Cambridge Commons, from the church building. HARVARD is still there! In 1960, FIRST-CHURCH installed its 13th pastor! 1962 Paul was drafted to be the Leader of a three-day Peace-March from the Boston Commons to the Nuclear Submarine Base at Groton Connecticut; giving Joan Bayes permission to sing at the send off because Joan's Father was very enthusiastically persuasive in saying that Joan most wanted to sing at the send-off worship service, at the Quaker-Meeting-House which is near the historic home of Longfellow! About one year later, Joan Bayes softened the tone of the March on Washington; by singing "We Shall Overcome" from the podium; from which Martin Luther King gave his most memorable speech. Joan Bayes may have been the only female-presenter at that historic gathering that filled THE WASHINGTON D.C. MALL. 1964 Paul became Assistant Professor of Physics at Coe College, in Cedar Rapids,Iowa; serving with Dr. Joe Kasper, a student of Dr. James van Allen, for whom earth's radiation belts are named. His first year at Coe he was the chairman of the "Institutional Research Committee"; but the college was not really ready for faculty members to do research on the very difficult policy issues which faced most colleges then. Such research had to wait for two years! 1967 Paul wrote a successful grant proposal to the National Science Foundation to start a college Computer Center with an IBM 1130 Main-Frame-Computer with 12,000 fast memory-bytes and 0.5 Megabytes of slow disk-memory-bytes; an input-keyboard, computer-keypunched-deck-reader, keypunched-deck-output, two manual-keypunch-machines to prepare punched-input-decks to load commuter programs into the IBM 1130 Computer. Dr. Smith was the Iowa Representative on National Council of the American Association of Physics Teachers, for about a dozen consecutive years ~ 1972 - 1984. In October of 1983 he went with a couple dozen members of the American Association of Physics Teachers to visit with Professors of Physics in major university physics departments in both Russia and China. The may have been one of the larger delegations to visit both Russia and China as the COLD- WAR-STARTED TO THAW. For Paul friendships evolved with a Chinese Electrical Engineer and a friend of his who was the granddaughter of the last Magician to an Emperor of China. Dr. Smith was the Secretary of the Iowa Democratic Party during 1974-1978, and then until about 2004 was secretary and/or Chair of many Convention-Rules/Nominations-Committees and Constitution-Revision-Committees; playing key roles in fine-tuning the Iowa-Caucus-Convention Process that plays a leading role in nominating Democratic Presidential Candidates each four years; for the United States of America. ( There are meetings at precinct-caucuses, county-levels, Congressional-District-Levels and at the State-as-a-Whole level - - - every two years!) With one exception Smith was a significant leader at all four levels during 1974- 2004 while transitioning into living in Colorado after retiring in about 1999. Driving around Iowa to and from such meetings probably totaled about 25,000 miles during 1973 - 2004. 1973 Dr. Smith was on his first sabbatical in the fall/winter and according to formal plans: (a) Created software to facilitate the input of physics-lab-data into computer programs on the IBM 1130 - - - with the data being punched into cards in a FORMAT-FREE-MANNER. The data was appropriately "analyzed" - - - yielding printed numerical reports. (b) Visited about a dozen physics department on college/university campuses within easy one- day-driving distances of Coe College; visiting with physics staff-members, Deans and/or Presidents - - - as available. The effort was designed to gain an overview of what was happening in small university and small college physics departments. Interviews were tape recorded. (c) Wrote about 260 train-of-consciousness essays pertaining to the Crisis-in-Physics- Teaching due to the levels of alienation between physics teachers/professors and physics students in general, but especially due to the levels of alienation between physics teachers/professors and female students. Those initial essays were made available on campus; but only a few undergraduate female students offered any spontaneous feedback to the contents of the original set of essays! More essays were written and extra credit was offered to many Modern-Astronomy-Class-Students; more authentic-feed-back was elicited in that way. For many years when you went to check out anything from the Coe College Library NO library materials were visible straight-ahead; EXCEPT FOR annual collections of essays! Adults never offered any significant-feed-back about the contents-of-the-essays! On the National Democratic Platform Committee during 1978 he successfully introduced a few amendments in committee, including one calling attention to the concentration of rare minerals in South Africa - - - when the dominant whites were mistreating the native blacks in South Africa. 1980 Dr. Smith initiated a workshop on the Platform Process and Priority-Voting; at a Mid-Term- National-Convention of the USA Democratic Party. 1983 Dr. Smith participated in a USA People-to-People Good-Will trip - with two dozen leading American physicists - - visiting many Russian and Chinese University-Physics-Departments. and comparing traditions in the training of the next generation of physicists. 1985 Dr. Smith gave his astronomy students opportunities to earn extra points by reading essays that were made available "on reserve" in the Coe College Library at the only check-out-desk for check-out for a few days. The essay-sets were bound-by-years in which they were written. Other reserve materials were shelved on book-cases facing toward each other and not visible to people at the check-out-desk! Only Dr. Smith's Bound-Essay-Volumes were visible to people checking out any library resources! The selves that the essays were on, were empty, except for them! It was an interesting way to display the essasy! Students offered interesting personal responses to diverse essays. Later the essays were made available on a local Coe Computer-Network; via computer terminals that were available to students in the library, and students used them as above. Even Later, computer terminals became available all across campus and in dorm rooms. For many years the students offered interesting personal comments on many essays that balanced the technical aspects of the modern astronomy course! By 1994 the essays had grown to thousands; and were made available on the WORLD-WIDE-WEB at www.essayz.com in about 1994 - - - at the imitative of a first year supportive female student who had volunteered to do editorial work entering essays into magnetic media her first semeter at Coe College, and then took an EXPLORATORY- TERM-COURSE on how to create new wed-sites in January of here freshman year. She suggested that she create a web site on which to make all of the essays available; there was one con- ference with Dr. Smith about how overall to structure the web-site - - - and no follow up conference. By the end of her freshman year the new web-site was functional. She worked on expanding the web-site as regards texts and support web-pages during the following years as a stuent at Coe College, summers, and even after she graduated. 1990 Dr. Smith was successful in introducing priority voting on platform planks into the Platform Process of the Iowa Democratic Pary during the late 1990's; and was highly honored for that success along with two other leaders in the process. The award winners and their guests were seated at an awards table at the front and center of the meeting room with approaching 1,000 people at the banquet. Because Dr. Smith's wife Margaret had her own very important meeting to attend that night, Dr. Smith had as his guest a young woman who had lead sub-committees of conventions' Committees-on-Rules-and-Nominations - - - counting the votes of delegates at County, District and State Conventions in which she had participated. An amazing woman from India - - - started the process by volunteering to work on "the essays-project" - - during the summer that followed her junior year, her first "job".
