The roots of most conflicts are to be found in the incoherent-ideals-and-values of the participants; not in the imperfect-people who are involved. Often the roots are to be found within the RELATIONSHIPS among the participants; rather than within the individual participants as isolated/estranged beings. When the participants focus upon each other as "evil" or "good" individuals --- they work in ways which disintegrate RELATIONSHIPS. The term "evil" pertains to RELATIONSHIPS more helpfully than "evil" pertains to isolated individuals without regard to their RELATIONSHIPS. It is usually the RELATIONSHIPS which need to be attended to and healed; so that the participants within the RELATIONSHIPS will naturally heal. Negative attention focused upon isolated individuals will contribute helpfully to healing neither individuals nor their RELATIONSHIPS. The key is to focus attention helpfully in appropriate places; e.g., on INCOHERENT: ideals, values, principles, questions, demands, commands, etc. When the participants focus upon trying to prevent others from associating themselves with evil: 1. People, Groups, Classes, Organizations, etc. 2. Ideals, Values, Principles, Visions, etc. 3. Images, Places, Doctrines, Rituals, etc. 4. Hopes, Aspirations, Expectations, etc. While-Ignoring the Alienative-Aspects of their own Relationships-With their Own-Neighbors the fruits of their efforts are likely to be Bitter-Fruits because they are Ignoring-Their-Relationships' Alienative-Aspects. Righteousness cannot be defined, achieved or enjoyed in terms which are NOT essentially Relational-Communal in nature. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in "Search for Honesty and Integrity" (On Being Yourself Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
