Is there any way in which such an isolated labeling of an individual person can be defended? If so, in what terms and upon what basis/authority? Consider the following specific situations: 1. A young child trapped in an addictive family. 2. A young child trapped in a mentally deranged family. 3. A teen age girl without any financial support working as a prostitute in a slum. 4. An alcoholic trapped in an alcoholic gang of close friends who support each other's alcoholic ways. 5. A drug addict in a slum making ends meet by dealing in drugs? 6. A well educated young pastor with wife and children --- trapped in a conservative/fundamentalist church which will not tolerate new ideas or insights? 7. A codependent wife trapped in a marriage with a domineering alcoholic husband --- whose extended family think he is a wonderful and powerful guy. 8. An employee in a company which is dominated by an addictive/domineering top leader --- and his/her codependent subordinates. 9. An intelligent political leader --- who is dependent for re-election upon voters who are uninformed, biased, Prejudiced, and fearful of anything which is new and/or different. 10. A business person within the management of ENRON at the height of its success story with all her life savings invested in ENRON stocks --- but she has become aware of the dishonest basis of its "success" story. Can anyone with integrity --- label any of the above individual people and/or what they do to survive --- as "evil" --- in isolation from focusing comparable attention upon the evil relationships/contexts/communities within which they find themselves trapped? How so? By what logic? On what evidence and/or authority? Can any honorable-good come from placing the label "evil" upon any such an individual --- while neglecting to focus a complementary amount of attention upon the evil relationships, contexts and/or communities --- within which the person is attempting to survive? How so? By what logic? On what evidence and/or authority? (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
