The community as a whole is under threat when any significant sub-community perceives itself to be under siege due to: 1. Mental illness on the part of key leaders --- which is not graciously recognized and treated in appropriate ways. 2. The evolution within any significant sub- community --- of a cosmological/mythological system within which the significant sub-community's meaning, significance, and reason-to-be pertain to unresolved conflict between it and the larger community. 3. The presence within the larger community of significant efforts to eliminate the powers and/or presence of the significant sub-community; i.e., efforts to achieve a genocide. 4. The absence within the larger community of respect, tolerance, and love towards the members/culture of the significant sub-community. 5. The presence within the larger community of domineering people who focus upon and/or victimize members of the significant sub-community. A siege mentality is engendered when any group adopts the attitude/belief that some ideal, value, principle, idea, attitude, belief, group, or manner of self expression must be eliminated, repressed, suppressed or kept-out-of-consciousness. The adoption of such an attitude/belief by any group often engenders a siege mentality in opposition --- leading to ultimate confrontations and conflicts. A siege mentality evolves when there are fears of extinction, liquidation, and or annihilation. People rarely behave prudently, wisely or temperately when siege mentalities echo back and forth --- and behaviors are dominated by individual and corporate forms of mental illnesses such as paranoia, mania and depression.
