When any program, plan, approach, system, or method fails time and time again to yield the desired/intended sweat fruits --- it is time to consider the alternatives and to ask why the outcomes are bitter fruits. Many times repeated bitter harvests are bringing us a message which needs to be heeded. Consider: 1. The alcoholic or drug addict who repeatedly seeks to solve/resolve the problems and dilemmas of life by returning to the favored "solution" which has never really worked. 2. The community which seeks to solve the crime problem by each year putting more criminals in jail and building more jails to accommodate the increasing percentage of the total population which "needs" to be in jail --- without every trying to understand and be in open and honest dialogue with the criminals who are in jail. 3. The community which seeks to solve the "problem" of prostitution without ever seeking to speak openly and honestly about how best to help young people to grow steadily and gradually into adults who joyfully engaged in healthy sexual relationships. 4. The religious community which seeks to solve the "problem" if internal inconsistencies between portions of their scriptures and between their scriptures and reliably substantiated secular truths --- by excommunicating people who point out the inconsistencies. 5. Religious communities which seek to deal with evil by excommunicating evil members of their communities --- because they define evil as having to do with non- conformity---rather than with alienation as in excommunication. 6. Scientists who seek to minimize bias by excommunicating themselves from people who are willing to consider seriously---reflexive insights which cannot be evaluated without bias when detected proven by detachment from the process under analysis. 7. Business people who pretend that business growth will always be good for business inside our finite space- ship Earth which will ultimately be destroyed by unremitting business growth and the generation of unremitting increases in the GROSS national product of GARBAGE. 8. Politicians who make a virtue of being unbalanced in their fanatical dedication to some single issue which alienates them from major portions of their constituencies. If the crop of fruits year after year are bitter, it may be wise to consider whether the plants and trees which are being nurtured need to be changed. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
