Children learn through imitation of admired parents, other adults and other children. Through freely chosen imitation people learn how to get along in coherent ways. When people do not get along in coherent ways some people seek to impose imitation which is not freely chosen; for imitation seems to be the key to getting along in coherent ways. However, if imitation is not freely chosen --- it does not lead well to getting along in coherent ways; imitation it may lead to coercion, conflict, contentiousness, tensions, and violence. Personal and communal well-being and coherence depend critically upon people expressing their own personal potentialities for integrity in freely chosen ways. When people seek to impose thoughts, attitudes, perceptions, and behavior patterns --- the attempt to do so sets up adversarial relationships. The possibilities of people finding integrative ways of expressing their potentialities are thus reduced. Attempts to impose imitative behaviors are usually tragic attempts which bear bitter fruit. We may know them by their fruits! (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
