Such people are not dedicated to conflict-resolution within themselves regarding their own inner lives --- and so export/project their own dissonance/conflict outward and engender many additional relationships of dissonance, conflict and violence. Some emotionally immature people cannot comfortably enter into kinds of personal relationships which entail high levels of openness, honesty and intimacy. Observing others' or suspecting others' involvement in such relationships --- engenders within such emotionally immature people discomfort, embarrassment, dissonance, and/or conflict --- which they then export/project in efforts to reduce their internal supply thereof. They try to hold others responsible for violating standards of good behavior; i.e., good in the sense that good behavior would not lead them to experience internal discomfort, embarrassment, dissonance or conflict. From their point of view, such standards are ones which stand independently of them; that are in their view "absolute," and of ultimate importance. When many respected, influential and powerful people are emotionally immature as indicated above --- it is difficult for their community to distinguish between immature standards and other more mature standards --- which acknowledge in firm ways that murder, rape, armed robbery, embezzlement, domestic violence, sexual abuse, sexual harassment, lying, cheating, dishonesty and addictions --- do violence to personal and communal integrity. We will do well and be well when we recognize, name, and talk openly and honestly about the consequences of emotional immaturity which leads to such behaviors --- and seek to raise babies, infants, and children in ways which will minimize occasions of such emotional immaturity, and the tragic costs thereof.
