     Different people  often start with different beliefs,             
assumptions and purposes --- s they focus upon contrasting                                                           
selections from  the  same scriptures ---  and arrive   at                                                                     
certain conclusions which are at extreme opposite poles of                                                                     
the dichotomies which were manifest in their beginning.                                                                        
                                                                                                                               
     What  scriptures say to people depends as  much  upon                                                                    
the  different  beliefs,  assumptions and  purposes  which             
people bring  to their selecting which parts of scriptures                                                                    
they regard as important ---  as upon the diverse passages                                 
which may be found within the scriptures.                             
                                                                                                                               
     People who begin with exclusive beliefs,  assumptions             
and  purposes  ---   are  prone  to  select  portions   of                                                                     
scriptures  in mutually exclusive ways;  i.e.,   excluding      
from  careful  considerations  those  other  portions   of                                                               
scriptures which are complementary to  the  portions  upon                                                                     
which they themselves focus exclusive attention.    
                                                                                                                               
     Purity   and   balance  are  regarded   as   mutually                            
exclusive.                       
                                                                                                                               
     Superiority  and  honest  dialogue  are  regarded  as                                 
mutually exclusive.                       
                                                                                                                               
     Conformity and  creativity  are regarded  as mutually            
exclusive.                       
                                                                                                                               
     Dichotomous people insist  that  either/or choices be                                                                    
made.    Balance is sacrificed in  efforts to be  best  at                                                                     
exclusive achievements in the complementary  ways of life.      
The tragic result is personal  and communal disintegration                                                                
as  open/honest  and communication is sacrificed upon  the
