Setting aside the intents and contents of affirmations, let us consider how the mood and manner of making affirmations affects the effects of making them. 1. Some affirmations are made by denying other peoples' affirmations --- which are perceived to be in conflict with the affirmation which is intended. It is hoped that through double-think the other people will correctly infer what the intended affirmation is --- in spite of the fact that the manner of making the affirmation is a "slap-in-their-faces." Denial is an exclusive mode of making affirmations. 2. Other affirmations are made in exclusive ways which claim that each affirmation is of ultimate power and authority --- putting down any other affirmations which might call for well balanced consideration of all different kinds of people's experiences, insights and beliefs. Exclusivity occurs in many modes of making affirmations. 3. Yet other affirmations are made through excommunications of those people to whom the affirmations are intended to deny: attention, hearings, respect, affection, community membership, fellowship, honor, authority and power. This is yet another form of exclusivity --- directed explicitly at persons as persons. 4. Some affirmations demand conformity in behavior on the part of others; and demand the exclusion of those unfaithful and undisciplined people who fail to share ultimate faith in and preoccupation with the injunctions, prescriptions, proscriptions, commandments, laws, judgements and condemnations which are thereby woven into a fabric of exclusivity. 5. Some affirmations are conveyed through the wearing of the robes of: purity, self-discipline, self-control, self-confidence, self-righteousness, certainty, perfection, arrogance, intolerance, contentiousness, and numerous community management techniques. People who treat each other exclusively tend to form increasingly exclusive small groups which cannot trust any other groups which are seen as being "different". They all engender both personal and communal disintegration of their own and other communities and persons. They do not and cannot see what they are doing to themselves and each other --- because their dedications are exclusive of any concerns for personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
