People who do not take prudent risks do not learn new things. Excessive prudence leads to not taking prudent risks. Judgementalism, condemnations and exclusivity have chilling effects upon prudent risk taking. It is very risky to be excessively prudent to the point of trying to avoid all risk-taking. People who do the "same old thing," over and over, do not discover that in many situations the "same old thing" is the wrong thing. There is risk in doing something new when you fear the rejection of friends who are stuck in old ruts and cannot recognize how stuck they are. Risk-taking entails the risk of rejection, judgement, condemnation and excommunication by people who are insecure and defensive. Their insecurity is heightened when they see other people doing new things for which the outcomes are not guaranteed. They seek to be in control of outcomes and seek guarantees of anticipated/desired outcomes. People who do not conform to their expectations heighten their levels of anxiety and are not well tolerated. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
