People differ in skin color, eye color, hair color, abilities, skills, knowledge, desires, temperaments, energy, emotional responses, etc. People are different. It is dishonest and disintegrative to pretend that people are not different; because it is a fact that not all people are alike. It is dishonest and disintegrative to demand that people pretend that people are not different; because it is a fact that not all people are alike. Some people are secure in being true to themselves and each other. Other people are so insecure that they find it difficult or impossible to be true to themselves and each other. Some people are open and honest; others are secretive and dishonest. People are different. Some people are defensive and make other people be/feel insecure. Other people are securely self- confident and help other people to enjoy security as the freedom to be safely vulnerable within diverse intimate relationships. Some people feel insecure in the presence of people and/or relationships which are different---from them and their relationships. Other people are different---and feel secure in the presence of people and/or relationships which are different. Some people are tolerant and can tolerate differences. Other people are different---and cannot tolerate differences. Some people are creative. New visions come to them, they accept new visions and they fulfill new visions. Other people are different in that they avoid new visions. Few new visions come to them, they accept few of the new visions which do come to them---and so fulfill very few new visions. They stick to old ways, formulas, prescriptions, proscriptions, traditions and patterns of conformity. They are disturbed and embarrassed by people who are not focused upon old ways, formulas, prescriptions, proscriptions, traditions and patterns of conformity. They often demand that people pretend that they are not different. They find it difficult and/or impossible to be open and honest. They are different from people who find it easy to be open and honest; and they are troubled by who people who find it easy to be open and honest. Some people find it easy to describe and deal with complex people and relationships. Other people are different---and find it difficult to describe or deal with complex people and relationships. They naturally want things to be simple. The latter people find it difficult to be open and honest---for they seek to make people and relationships to appear to be simple---when they are not simple. Their efforts to generate false simplicity back- fire---and generate additional complexity. Their behavior patterns are dysfunctional because they are dishonest. The people who try to make other people be simple by trying to conform them to some single standard for proper behavior---are different from people who find it easy to openly and honestly describe how people differ from each other---and find it easy to accept the ways in which people differ from each other. People who find it difficult to accept the ways in which people differ from each other are different---in dysfunctional ways---from people who find it easy to describe and accept the ways in which people differ from each other. People differ in how they respond to the differences between people. Some people can accept and describe the differences between people. Other people are different; and cannot openly and honestly accept and describe the differences between people. The latter kind of people are often trapped in tragic collusive games of mutual self deception---dishonest games according to the rules of which people must appear to be alike; conforming to their provincial conceptions of what constitutes goodness, perfection, purity and propriety. They are usually not familiar with true love; and they fear true love. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
