We often fail to maintain a clear BOUNDARY between WHO we are, and WHAT we HAVE; OR between who we are, and what we DO; OR between who we are, and what we APPEAR to be. When we fail to MAINTAIN a clear BOUNDARY between who we are and the other THINGS which are usually ASSOCIATED with us---we end up carrying around a lot of other THINGS which are not essential to our being true to ourselves and each other---much as the "ancient mariner" carried around the DEAD ALBATROSS hung around his neck. Thus we come to think of our BURDENS as essential parts of us and cannot understand why we are always so tired. When we cannot let go of our tiring burdens because we CANNOT TELL the difference between our essential selves and our heavy burdens---we are in REAL TROUBLE. We need to TELL ourselves and each other what our burdens are and to learn to LET GO of our non-essential THINGS which are BURDENS to us but which we still carry around with us as if they were essential parts of our being who we are. Often we generate TROUBLE for ourselves and each other when we require each other to carry around burdens which are not essential to our being true to ourselves and each other. We confuse each other by requiring each other to pretend that our possessions (things, ideas, ideals, doctrines, rituals, habits, etc) are essential parts of our being true to ourselves and each other---when they are artificial additions which we can let go of whenever we chose to let go of them. We cannot tell that we can let go of them until we tell each other about our experiences of relief we do let go of them. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
