In the absence of internal patterns for the resolution of internal conflicts---a person or community is torn apart by internal conflicts which wage back and forth with sometimes one side on the ascendancy leading to one kind of behavior; and other times another side on the ascendance leading to another kind of behavior. Outsiders cannot then depend upon any consistent pattern of behavior and perceive a lack of integrity. There is a lack of internalized patterns leading to the resolution of internal conflicts. A person may have internalized ideals and values which lead to them driving themselves physically beyond the limits of their physical body. They are likely to disintegrate physically with fatigue, frustration, depression and disease---and so be unreliable. A person may have internalized ideals and values which are in conflict with each other and not have internalized any transcendent ways to resolve such conflicts. Such people are likely to be drive on some occasions by some ideals and values; and on other occasions by conflicting ideals and values. Outsiders will not be see such people as behaving in any predictable way---as lacking integrity because they lack internalized conflict resolution skills. A community may have internalized ideals and values which lead the members of the community to be at war with each other. Outsiders will not be able to rely upon the community as a whole to behave in any predictable way; because it lacks the essential conflict resolution skills which lead to communal integrity. Conflict resolution skills are essential to both personal and communal integrity. People and communities which are committed to conflicting ideals and values in the absence of concern for personal and communal integrity and/or in the absence of conflict resolution skills---are unlikely to enjoy personal or communal integrity. They are likely to disintegrate. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
