Consider the following list of rights which we may on occasions believe we can, should and/or do have. The right to: Not work. Be happy. Joy. Freedom from limits. Due process. Justice. Relax. Be free from conflicts. Privacy. Be free of embarrassments. Do as we wish. Not be disturbed. A fair wage. Be free of discrimination. Tell the truth. Petition our government. Clean air and water. A good education. Drive a car. Take annual vacations. A good job. Worship God as we choose. Honest intimacy. Be accepted as we are. Read books. Publish the truth. When we do not enjoy the rights which be assume, believe or think that we can, should or do have---there is cognitive dissonance. We may try to eliminate that dissonance in a wide variety of ways. Whether we enjoy personal and communal integrity depends greatly upon how we try to eliminate that dissonance and in what ways we revise our views of what rights we can, should and/or do have.
