Such "things" may be pointed to, described, represented and otherwise called to attention with the aid of the following words: EVIL TRAGEDIES MISTAKES IMPERFECTIONS SINS DISORDER CONFUSION MISUNDERSTANDINGS ENTROPY TEMPTATIONS FAILURES DISHONESTY FLAWS ESTRANGEMENT CORRUPTION VIOLENCE SIN CONFLICT COERCION WAR PAIN DISEASE TENSION SICKNESS DEATH Clearly many of the above "things" are not objects or objective realities. What people want to prevent are undesirable aspects of human relationships which are often very painful. Since "a stitch in time saves nine" some early preventive efforts would reduce greatly the undesirable pain, etc. Our dilemma is that often our efforts to prevent the undesirable "things" through attempts to be in control of them---generate much alienation, estrangement, misunderstanding, resentment, dishonesty, and pain. To prevent the many "things" seems to require that we control people's behaviors, actions, decisions, thoughts, feelings, communications, perceptions, and experiences. Our efforts to control them are often not appreciated by those people who experience our efforts as violations of their personal and communal integrities. Thus our efforts to prevent many of the undesirable "things" occasion many of the undesirable "things" in ways which we do not understand. We will do well to seek to understand how it is that our efforts to prevent the undesirable aspects of our lives, in fact often occasion the very undesirable aspects of our lives which we are trying to prevent.
