We die spiritually if we cling to our gifts, clutching onto them as if our lives will be enriched by holding onto them. We die physically if we do not prudently use our gifts to take good care of the integrities of our minds, bodies, souls and communal spirits. We die intellectually if we do not wisely use our minds to think clearly and critically about differences and similarities as they pertain to our personal and communal integrity. We die emotionally if we do not honestly share our perceptions, feelings, desires, fears and affections with others. We die technocratically if we seek security and power in manipulative systems and programs of control and achievement. We die apathetically if we let go of all our ideals and values---as if they were worthless. We die in wars and conflicts if we worship our personal ideals and values as if they were divine and of ultimate importance---requiring sacrifices of openness and honesty to fulfill them in thoughtless service. We die emotionally if we withdraw from each other, holding our gifts close to our selves in fear of vulnerability through reflexive involvement with each other. We die of indifference if we hold onto and refuse to reveal our gifts as if holding them for ourselves will make all the difference we need to make. We die of addictions and codependence in our collusive prisons if we are not honest about the gifts we have, and the gifts we do not have; and so live in a false world of pretense and deception. In the light of the above we need to recognize, name and talk about why parents, religious leaders, teachers and professors often: manipulate, alienate, discourage, do not help, complicate relationships, neglect students, objectify, de-personalize people---and so fail to promote personal and communal integrity.
