It is a reasonable thing to consider carefully the possible consequences of alternative courses of action before making a decision as to how to act. It is a reasonable thing to consider carefully the observed consequences of a course of action taken, so as to learn useful lessons from the consequences. It is, however, a perverse thing to attempt to control the responses of other people because of a course of action we have taken; for doing so entails at least one deliberate calculated lie---that we can be in control of their responses. It is a perverse thing to tell a deliberate calculated lie; but it is even more perverse to engage in a systematic pattern of misleading behaviors, secrecy, and calculated dishonesty; as in a collusion or addiction. It is a perverse thing to tell a deliberate lie, but it is a more perverse thing to engage in the systematic denial of truths---in an effort to control the effects upon other people --- of a course of action we have taken. It is unfortunate when we or others are ignorant and confused; but it is perverse to engage in systematic efforts to keep ourselves and other people ignorant and confused, or to actively promote ignorance, confusion and chaos. It is tragic when people are alienated from each other because of ignorance, confusion, and misunderstanding; but it is far more perverse for people to deliberately and systematically engage in activities which inevitably generate alienation, ignorance, confusion and misunderstanding. Being systematic can be perverse, as well as helpful! (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
