Being defensive can occasion fears and defensiveness in the other people whom we need to cultivate as friends, and whose cooperation we need if we are to be people and communities of integrity. Being protective of what we value in exclusive ways can similarly occasion fears and defensiveness in the other people whom we need to cultivate as friends and whose cooperation we need if we are to be people and communities of integrity. Seeking to achieve security for ourselves at the expense of others and the security of others---can lead to more of the madness, insanity and alienation which we so fear. Letting our resentments, anger, rage, fears and alienations lead us to try to even the score through revenge as a self centered form of "justice"---will lead us to escalate the very forms of violence and disintegration which occasioned our resentment, anger, rage, fear and alienation. The many religious, ethnic, national, capitalist, communist, fascist and dictatorial wars of history illustrate the futility of all of our human efforts to unilaterally defend, protect and make secure that which some humans have regarded as of such great value to themselves---as to serve as the justification for the sacrifice of others people's personal and communal security and integrity. The ideals, values, attitudes, assumptions, beliefs and convictions which lead us into such inhumane efforts are misleading and disintegrative in tragic ways. We must learn how to transcend such ideals, values, attitudes, assumptions, beliefs and convictions; no matter how much we believe them to be of divine origin. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
