    %REFLEXIVE PARADIGM ASSES CONSEQUENCE OBJECTIVE 930304

     The  process  of assessing the  consequences  of  our
paradigm,   our  system  of beliefs and attitudes,   is  a
reflexive rather than an objective process.   We cannot be
objective   about   our  own  most  fundamental   beliefs,
attitudes,  values, ideals and expectations;  for they are
some of the most essential aspects of our own identity. We
cannot be objective about possible changes in our own most
fundamental  beliefs,   attitudes,   values,   ideals  and
expectations; for such changes would be changes in some of
the most essential aspects of our own identity.

     Scientists  find it particularly difficult to  assess
the  consequences of their paradigm,  since it calls  upon
them  to  approach all processes  objectively.   For  this
reason  scientists try to be  objective or to appear to be
objective in assessing the consequences of their paradigm.
Since   they   cannot  be  truly  objective  in  such   an
assessment, they fall into the trap of trying to appear to
be objective.   Such dishonesty undermines the possibility
of  personal and  communal  integrity  in  the process  of
assessment of the consequences of scientists' paradigm.

     Narrowly   trained  scientific  specialists  are  not
qualified  to carry out the process of the  assessment  of
the consequences of their scientific paradigm,  and of the
processes   of   training  narrowly   trained   scientific
specialists.   At the same time neither are people who are
totally ignorant of what it is like to be such a  narrowly
trained  specialist  in a good position to carry  out  the
assessments which need to be carried out.   It will not be
easy  to  specify  what  training will best prepare  young
people  to  carry  out the assessments which  need  to  be
carried  out.    Adults  who  are trapped in  a  collusive
paradigm cannot wisely specify how young people should  be
trained to transcend the entrapping collusive paradigm.
