What may seem to us to be a matter of pure reason and logic, is often the product of pure rationalization; i.e., the process of making emotionally based choices appear to us to be based upon non-emotional considerations which we respect highly. What our choices, decisions and actions appear to us to be based upon---is strongly influenced by what we feel is most worthy of respect. We like to think that our choices, decisions and actions are based upon what we respect most. In a highly educated, logical and reason- oriented community---we are more likely to respect logic than feeling; and we like to believe that our choices and decisions are expressions of our logic, rather than of our emotional lives. In fact, how we think, what we chose to think about, the fabrics of logic and reason which we weave in our processes of rationalization---are all strongly influenced by the associations which exist in our memories between the patterns of thought and feelings/emotions we experienced in the past. Usually (but not always) we avoid thought elements and patterns of thought with which we associate unpleasant emotions. Thus emotions often direct our thinking, yet we think that we are being very objective and logical. Through collusive games of mutual self deception we may think that we are being logical and objective, when in fact our logic is being driven and guided by emotional considerations of which we are totally unaware. It is illogical to believe that it is good for us to be dishonest with ourselves and each other about the roles which our emotions play in driving and guiding our thoughts. Such dishonesty costs us dearly! (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
