Use of such tools engenders rebellion, anger, resentment, alienation, estrangement and misunderstanding --- and so leads in turn to refusals to follow, cooperate, or participate as members of the community which is lead in by leaders who use such tools. Tragically, however, the use of such tools leads to more people trying to use such tools to achieve their own disintegrative goals, aims, and ideals; and so to the disintegration of understanding, cooperation and community. It is wise to seek to avoid the use of coercion, violence, force, anger, deception, entrapment, imprisonment, restrictions and their like---as tools of leadership and guidance. It is wise to be cautious in respecting the use of such means as tools of leadership and guidance---because of the rebellion, anger, resentment, alienation, estrangement and misunderstanding to which their use naturally leads. Thus it is wise to be cautious in respecting those leaders who make use of such disintegrative tools. We will do well to observe and honestly talk about the natural and frequent disintegrative consequences of our leaders' use of such tools. The use of disintegrative tools flows from respect for disintegrative ideals and values. There are some ideals and values which lead naturally to the use of disintegrative tools; the logic of such ideals and values is compatible with the logic of the use of disintegrative tools. Thus such ideals and values are inherently disintegrative. Those people who are the incarnations of disintegrative ideals and values are lead by their disintegrative ideals and values to become leaders who find it natural, logical, and reasonable to make use of disintegrative tools. Their ideals and values tragically mis-lead them to use of disintegrative tools, and to neglect to use integrative tools. There are integrative values and ideals which lead people naturally to the use of only integrative tools. People who are the incarnation of integrative ideals and values naturally seek to avoid the use of and respect for disintegrative tools. Such people seek to work for persona and communal integrity, honesty, understanding, cooperation, tolerance; i.e., for shalom in its most comprehensive communal/personal sense. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
