Some people become so deferential to the rights of other people, and so preoccupied with pleasing others and meeting other people's expectations; that they neglect/ignore their own rights, and may even think that it is improper to think about one's own rights. We are sick if we neglect/ignore our own rights, or if we think that it is improper to think about our own rights. We may have fallen into the trap of thinking/feeling that it is improper for us to be reflexive (non-objective) and to feel good about our own successes. Yet, if we do not have a protected right to feel good about our own successes (which includes the right to be free to succeed), how are we to wisely guide our behavior away from failures and towards success? How are we to learn from our mistakes if we have no right to feel good about our own successes? In the absence of healthy protected rights regarding success, we are prone to engage in repeated failures including failures to learn from failures. If other people do not protect our rights to be true to our selves, to be free to succeed and to enjoy our own success; then we are unlikely to enjoy success. This clearly means that we have a responsibility to protect the rights of other people to be true to their real selves, to be free to succeed, and to enjoy their own successes. Each of us is one of the "others" who must protect people's rights to be true to themselves, to be free to succeed, and to enjoy their own success. If we each fail to protect other people's rights; we will all suffer the consequences of our failures to protect each other's rights. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
