Coerced conformity invites dishonesty as a defensive measure. Defensive dishonesty leads to internal dishonesty and personal disintegration; which in turn leads to communal disintegration. In the presence of disintegration, standards for conformity become confused and disintegrate; and the community lacks unity, ceases to be with-unity. Thus the attempt to force members of a community to both conform and be honest always fails. When members of a community are given signals to both conform and be honest, they get mixed signals; they usually cannot respond with integrity to the conflicting signals. They recognize that the signals lack integrity, and they find it nearly impossible to respond with integrity to signals which lack integrity. The usual response to such mixed signals is to respond in dis-integrative ways. When we receive mixed signals we need to be honest with ourselves (and maybe with others) that the signals we are receiving are mixed signals. Taking refuge in confusion and pretense about mixed signals will not make things better for us. To protect our own personal integrity in the presence of mixed communal signals, we need to be honest (at least with ourselves) about the lack of integrity in the signals we are receiving. It may not be safe to be honest with others about our perceptions that the signals we are receiving are signals which lack integrity; for within collusions caution is in order when tempted to speak the truth openly and publicly. If within ourselves we maintain our own personal integrity, keep touch with the deepest aspects of ourselves, and are prudent when tempted to speak the truth; we may survive to promote communal integrity through contributing to significant conflict resolution. Fighting battles which perpetuate conflict will not improve matters. We must get to the roots of conflicts between ideals and values, and help the incarnations of conflicting ideals and values to work to resolve the conflicts between the ideals and values which they embody.
