We would do well to think of alienation as a process. We need to understand the dynamics of the process of alienation in order to be able to understand the condition of alienation which is a result of the process of alienation. Alienation is an aspect of human relationships. It is also an aspect of the condition of persons who are participants in the relationships of alienation. We cannot understand alienation as a condition of a person; for alienation has to do with the changing relationships between people. In the absence of any relationships between people the concept of alienation would make no sense. The reality of alienation can make sense only within the context of understanding the processes of personal relationships. Alienation has to do with the break-down of open and hones communication within human relationships. Communication may continue but only in conventional, conformal, formal, traditional, ritualistic, legalistic, objective, analytic, dishonest, deceptive, misleading and other less-than-integrative ways. Or, communication may be reduced to an absolute minimum; participants seeking to avoid as much communication as they can avoid. When communication breaks down there is a tendency to shift to coercive, manipulative and violent forms of communication: threats, manipulative offers, punitive actions, terrorism, criminal actions and war. It is difficult to avoid all forms of communication; maybe it is impossible for humans to avoid all forms of communication. We can chose what forms of communication to use, and in that choosing we chose the quality of our individual and collective lives. All too often the processes of human relationships lead to decreasing levels of openness, honesty, understanding and sympathy in human communications. To promote personal and communal integrity we need to understand the conditions and circumstances which promote the decay of the quality of our communication, and understand the conditions and circumstances which promote the improvement in the quality of our communications. The quality of communications rarely remains constant. In the absence of integrative efforts the quality of communications decays. It takes integrative efforts to maintain open and honest communications. (c) 2005 by Paul A. Smith in (On Being Yourself, Whole and Healthy) ==========================================================
