The roots lie in particular forms of neglect which are born not of indolence, but of distraction. The ideals, values and goals in which we may find the root of disintegration distract people who are addicted to them; they distract such people from giving adequate consideration to what is essential for personal and communal integrity. Such people are too busy fixing things and people to give adequate consideration to what is essential to personal and communal integrity. Such people are addicted to fixing, controlling, manipulating and improving upon things as things, and upon people as things. Addictive people keep themselves so fixated upon the fulfillment of their ideals, values and goals; that they have no time or energy to reflect upon the consequences of their fixation. Some of their ideals, values and goals call for the avoidance of such reflection; because such reflection would reveal the lack of integrity in the set of ideals, values and goals which drive such people. Each disintegrative set of ideals, values and goals works to protect itself from exposure as a system which lacks integrity. It entails dishonesty which conceals the dishonesty. It is a reflexive system, even if it is embodied in an ostensibly objective scientist. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
